Oil Pulling

An Ancient Practice, A Modern Mouthwash

Oil pulling is one of the oldest oral care rituals in the world. Originating from Ayurvedic medicine thousands of years ago, the practice involves swishing oil through the teeth to draw out bacteria, reduce plaque, and support overall mouth health.

Why It Works

Oil pulling works by a simple mechanism: as you swish, the oil binds to bacteria in your mouth. The fat molecules in coconut oil attract and trap harmful microorganisms from around your gums, between teeth, and across oral tissue. When you spit, the bacteria goes with it.

In our oil pulling we use coconut oil as our base because it contains lauric acid, a fatty acid recognised for its natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. This means our oil pulling doesn’t just clean: it actively supports gum health and helps reduce inflammation.

    time.

Essential oils like peppermint, spearmint, and tea tree leave your mouth feeling clean and fresh.

  • Microbiome-Friendly

Works with your mouth’s natural balance, unlike alcohol-based mouthwashes that strip everything.

How to Oil Pull

Oil pulling is the first step in your oral care routine. By starting with oil pulling, you dissolve and loosen plaque and bacteria first, so your toothbrush and floss can work more effectively afterwards.

  1. Pour 2–3 capfuls of mouthwash (use the bottle cap as your measure).
  2. Swish and pull the oil gently through your teeth for 5–20 minutes.
  3. Spit into the sink. Our formula is designed to stay liquid, so no risk of clogging your drain.
  4. Rinse your mouth with water.
  5. Floss, then brush your teeth as normal.

If you’re new to oil pulling, start with five minutes and build up gradually. The oil will become thinner and lighter in colour as it collects bacteria, that’s how you know it’s working.

FAQs

What is oil pulling and where does it come from?

Oil pulling is an Ayurvedic oral care practice that originated in India thousands of years ago. It involves swishing oil in the mouth to draw out bacteria. The practice is referenced in the Charaka Samhita, one of the foundational texts of Ayurvedic medicine. At Georganics, we use organic coconut oil as a base for its lauric acid content, which provides natural antimicrobial properties

What are the benefits of oil pulling?

Oil pulling helps reduce plaque buildup, supports gum health through anti inflammatory action, freshens breath by removing odour-causing bacteria, and stimulates saliva production which aids
remineralisation. It’s the ideal first step in your oral care routine, loosening and dissolving bacteria before you brush and floss.

Should I oil pull before or after brushing?

Before. Oil pulling is most effective as the first step in your routine. By swishing first, you dissolve and loosen plaque and bacteria, making your toothbrush and floss more effective afterwards. The recommended order is: oil pull, rinse, floss, then brush.

How much should I use?

Use 2–3 capfuls, the bottle cap is designed as your measure. Swish gently for 5–20 minutes. If you’re just starting out, 5 minutes is enough. Build up gradually as you get used to the practice.

Can I spit it in the sink?

Yes. Unlike pure coconut oil which can solidify and clog pipes, our oil pulling mouthwash is specifically formulated to stay
liquid. You can spit it straight into the sink without any issues.

Is oil pulling a replacement for mouthwash?

Our oil pulling mouthwash is designed as an
alternative to conventional mouthwash. Unlike alcohol-based mouthwashes that can disrupt your oral microbiome, our coconut oil formula respects the natural balance in your mouth while still providing effective cleaning.

Why coconut oil specifically?

We chose organic virgin coconut oil for a specific reason: it contains lauric acid, a fatty acid with well-documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The fat molecules in coconut
oil also have a natural affinity for binding to bacteria, making the pulling action more effective
