FAQs
What's the difference between oil pulling and mouthwash tablets?
They serve different purposes and work in different ways. Oil pulling is a slower, more thorough practice, you swish coconut oil in your mouth for 5 to 20 minutes. The oil binds to bacteria and debris, drawing them out of hard-to-reach areas. It's ideal as a morning ritual before brushing. Mouthwash tablets are quicker: you dissolve a tablet in water and rinse for 30 to 60 seconds. The sodium bicarbonate neutralises acids and the peppermint oil freshens breath. They're convenient for a fast refresh after meals or as the final step of your evening routine. Many people use both, oil pulling in the morning for a deeper clean, tablets during the day for quick freshness.
Do I still need mouthwash if I brush and floss properly?
Brushing and flossing are the foundation, but they don't reach every surface. A mouthwash, whether oil-based or tablet-based, can help in three ways: it reaches areas your brush and floss miss (like the back of the tongue and soft tissue), it helps reduce the overall bacterial load in your mouth, and it supports fresher breath for longer. That said, mouthwash is most effective as a complement to brushing and flossing, not a replacement. If your oral hygiene routine is already thorough, adding a rinse step is about optimising — not compensating.
Why doesn't Georganics use alcohol in its mouthwash products?
Alcohol (ethanol) is used in many conventional mouthwashes as a carrier and antimicrobial agent. The problem is that it's indiscriminate, it disrupts the entire oral microbiome, including beneficial bacteria that help protect your gums and regulate acidity. It also dries out the mouth, which can reduce saliva production and actually increase the conditions that lead to bad breath. Our oil pulling mouthwash uses coconut and sunflower oil as natural carriers, and our mouthwash tablets rely on sodium bicarbonate and peppermint oil — both effective at reducing harmful bacteria without the collateral damage of alcohol.
When should I use chewing gum instead of mouthwash?
Chewing gum is designed for moments when rinsing isn't practical, after a meal at work, on a commute, during travel. Our xylitol chewing gum stimulates saliva production (your mouth's natural defence against acid attacks) and the xylitol actively inhibits the bacteria responsible for plaque and cavities. Mouthwash, whether oil pulling or tablets, is better suited for a dedicated moment in your routine, like morning or evening. Think of gum as your between-moments protection and mouthwash as your dedicated rinse step.
