It’s that time of year again. The January detox…
This year one thing seems to be overshadowing all others - Veganuary.
With over 500,000 people pledging to go Vegan this month it is twice as popular as it was in 2019.
So why is Veganuary becoming so popular?
Well, if one person goes vegan for a month, you would not only save an estimated:
- 30 animal lives
- 281kg of harmful carbon dioxide emissions
- 913 square feet of forest
- 152,207 litres of water.
In fact according to researchers at Oxford University going vegan is the single biggest way you can reduce your environmental impact on the planet.
A perception of veganism is that it is purely to benefit animals and animal welfare, however arguably the most important reason for its growth in popularity is due to its environmental impact - as pushed recently by David Attenborough.
The Vegan Society claim that if the whole world went vegan, it could save 8 million human lives by 2050, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by two thirds and lead to healthcare-related savings and avoided climate damages of $1.5 trillion.
There are plenty of myths about veganism (where do you get your protein?) and we encourage everyone to do their own research on whether a vegan diet is right for them. Ultimately any decent diet should be well planned and anything you are worried you may become deficient in you can definitely make up for with a well structured meal plan.
Veganism isn’t just about diet though - it is a mentality and an ethos, it means not buying leather products or wool and checking whether your beauty or haircare brands test on animals (we don’t!)
Take everything a step at a time - try Veganuary for a month and see how you feel. Many people find their skin is clearer and constantly feel far less bloated with a vegan diet.
